Junior volleyball can teach many positive values, such as the spirit of cooperation, self-discipline, and regard for personal fitness. It is difficult for these desirable traits to take root in young players, however, if the adults around them fail to set the proper example. JJVA insists that our parents refrain from criticizing opposing players, our players, coaches, officials, other parents, their own child, or teammates of their own child and always remains respectful in the spectator area.
There may never be a perfect fit between the goals and priorities of coaches and parents; each group has their own perspective. Both, however, share a mutual interest in the players development of basic volleyball skills and attitudes.
JJVA parents ally themselves with the coach in teaching their daughters to cope with the natural frustrations of being a member of a competitive team. Our players learn how to deal with demanding superiors, to be a cooperative team member, to make use of positive and negative feedback, to achieve mental toughness and to be a gracious winner or loser.
Our JJVA parents encourage their daughters to show their coaches that they have a high level of commitment to volleyball. Those who display the greatest zest for the sport tend to receive the greatest attention from their coach. We teach players that they can display their commitment by: Proper mental and physical preparation, enthusiasm on and off the court, and actively supporting their teammates.
In 1989, the Jacksonville Junior Volleyball Association, a Jacksonville youth sport association, was founded by three area coaches for the purpose of promoting the sport of volleyball for school age students in the city and surrounding areas; FCCJ Head Coach, Mary Andrew, The Bolles School Head Coach, Elise Bush and Mayport Middle School, then-Head Coach, Brandy King.
In nine years these awesome ladies grew the Club from 30 players and 3 coaches, to almost 200 players of all ages and over 30 coaches offering opportunities for the girls in skill development and lifetime enjoyment of the sport to playing in college and many through scholarships.
This year we went over 100 for the number of our club members who have gone on to play college volleyball, most with scholarships; 20 last season alone!
While the Central and South Florida areas have over 75 junior volleyball clubs, the JJVA is one of only three Junior Volleyball Associations in North Florida.
JJVA staff consists of the following: 2 Division Coordinators, the Operations Director, the Chief Financial Officer, the Secretary and the Treasurer. Group Coordinators are responsible for the organization and the operation of their divisions. The Club Secretary handles tournament registrations, travel arrangements for coaches, all club communications and website design/management. The Treasurer handles bookkeeping, taxes and billing, and works closely with the CFO on budgets. A Board of Directors approves policy and determines long-range planning objectives. Volunteer committees will be organized for the purpose of conducting fund raising events, working tournament concessions, and assisting the club in other ways.
Each team is required to have a team parent volunteer for team communication purposes.
This year we will implement a Sports Committee, chaired by Bill Sherman. He had a team of parents who assisted him in observing our teams and supporters at tournaments. This team will served as a direct communication system of club progress and behaviors to the Operations Director and the Board. Since the Operations Director and staff cannot be at every match or tournament, this allows for a better flow information concerning the progress of the club.
The many generous sponsors of JJVA want the players in the greater Jacksonville area to have the opportunity to train in a state of the art facility that houses our entire club. Our athletes will take advantage of the many services that are offered on a daily basis. Lessons, skill sessions, practices, weight training, conditioning, video taping and recruiting are just some of the amazing opportunities we provide.
