Beach volleyball is now the fastest growing sport in the nation! The combination of speed, agility, strength, and finesse makes beach volleyball an all-around sport that can be used as a great cross-training activity for indoor volleyball. Two-person beach volleyball has grown to the point that it is no longer just played as a recreational sport. Some of the best indoor players in the nation grew up playing on the beach. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

 

About me: I grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where I began competing in beach volleyball tournaments by the age of 13. I played in a junior regional qualifying tournament in Jacksonville and won! This victory gave my partner, parents, and myself, an all-expense-paid trip to Hermosa Beach, California, to compete in the Junior Beach Volleyball National Championship. Opportunities like this are becoming more and more frequent due to the growth of the sport. I have also been to Australia to play in the first ever Junior Olympics (18 yrs and under), where we placed 4^th out of 16 teams from around the world. In Australia we finished better than the other American team, so USA volleyball sponsored us to go to France and play in the first ever FIVB Junior World Tour (20 yrs and under), where we placed 5^th out of 25 teams. Both of these trips were all-expense-paid.

 

Now, I have never been a physical phenomenon, but I am a two-time Indoor Junior Olympics All-American. It’s not because I jumped 50” high (because I don’t). I attribute my success to my sound and consistent playing abilities. I developed these abilities largely through the amount of training I put in on the beach. Playing in the wind, exposed to the elements, gave me an edge that neither my opponents nor my teammates could match. In addition, I found myself being able to outlast just about everyone else on the court!

Beach Volleyball Club is rapidly growing throughout the state and nation. We want JJVA and the Jacksonville community to continue to participate in a fantastic sport that many people have already taken to. That being said, JJVA is proud to present our 2^nd Annual Beach Volleyball Season. In addition to learning a great new sport, the NCAA has just sanctioned Women’s beach volleyball as a collegiate sport.
