Pleasant Surprises-Written by John
Tawa, 3/1/08 This week, I asked coaches to share some of
their “Pleasant Surprises,” the player on a team/club
who has far exceeded expectations for her at this stage
of the season. Here are some deserving of
recognition. Jordan Cangelosi, 5-8 Soph. OH, JJVA 17N --
A leaper touching 9-8, Cangelosi has excelled since
relocating to the Jacksonville area. She
crushed the ball during the high school season, helping
Nease reach the state tournament, then made the National
team at JJVA and is leading the team in kills with 72
(2.5 per game) and aces with 17. She also is a strong
student, posting a 4.0 GPA in high school honors
classes. |

PREP VOLLYEBALL.......
|
In the finals was JJVA 16
National, a team Tampa 15 Black defeated at an MLK event
here last month. JJVA overcame Virginia Beach in three
in its first match, then beat
Kelly Brown
and Treasure Coast in three in the semifinals to find
the revenge match for the title it was hoping for.
Trying to keep his tired team loose with funny quips,
Coach Dagostino succeeded early in getting his team to
play. Particularly impressive was 8th-grade attacker
Jordan
Burgess, who is a player I suspect we’ll
be writing a ton about before her career is done.
JJVA, aka “Jacksonville Juniors Volleyball Association,”
caught Tampa at 17-apiece in Game 1 on a dump from
superb freshman setter
Kamryn Sherman,
then took the lead for good on kills from
Holland Hoefnagel
and Jen
Renaker. Hoefnagel’s kill ended Game 1,
25-21.
Game 2 was played close until a three-point Tampa run,
sparked by a kill from
Kristin Liguori
and a block from
Bryne Fruhmorgen,
extended the young Tampa team’s lead to 20-16.
But JJVA wasn’t interested in
going to a third set yet again and was determined to
take advantage of Tampa’s fatigue and inexperience.
A kill and ace from Hoefnagel started JJVA on the
comeback trail. The run reached four, and tied the set
at 20-20, on Sherman’s quick set to
Rachel Brown.
Five more points followed in rapid succession, including
Sara Steffan
tooling the block to give JJVA the lead, Hoefnagel acing
again and libero
Mariah McCallum
coming up with a rare back row kill (matching Tampa
libero
Charlotte Hill from earlier in the set).
Sherman finished the nine-point closing run with another
sweet dump that evened the season series between these
two fine teams.
JJVA Coach Adis Imamovic said the key to success, even
when playing from behind, is to take it one point at a
time.
“That’s what we’ve been working on in practice,” he
said. “We don’t look at the score but play one point at
a time.”
Imamovic also stressed that winning, and exacting
revenge, was a team, not individual, effort.
“We’ve played tournaments with eight players and nine
players,” he said. “We need all 10 to win.” |
